Evaluation and Mitigation of Desertification in the Sicily Region, including local participatory experiences

Objectives: 1. Evaluate the intensity and extension of the areas prone to drought and desertification.

2. Evaluate the socio-economic dimension of the phenomenon, including the implementation of two pilot participatory actions at local level, in the Municipalities of Licata and Cammarata, in the Province of Agrigento.
Sectorial Topic (Note): Desertification monitoring and assessment
Actor(s)[Nation(Ministry, Agency)/Organization]: Ministry of Environment and Protection of Territory, (MATT), Italian Agency for New Technologies, Energies and Environment - ENEA (Italy); Sicily Region (Italy)
Contents: The Sicily Region is one of the Southern Italian region most affected by land degradation
Means of Implementation: Amount of financing 100.000,00 euro.
1. On the basis of existing data and observations, the ESA (Environmentally Sensitive Areas) Index, proposed by the European project MEDALUS (Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use), an integrated assessment of Climate, Soil, Vegetation and Land Management has been produced by GIS elaboration.

2. Participatory activities have been carried out, through European Awareness Scenario Workshop (EASW) methodology in the municipalities of Licata and Cammarata in the Agrigento Province. Cammarata EASW has been implemented in synergy with the DESERTNET project (see project n. 46 of the database).
Target year: 2002
Target Area/Place: Sicily
Expected Outcome(S): 1. The identification of the different degree of sensitivity of the Sicilian territory and production of the map of the areas vulnerable to desertification, on the basis of soil, climate, vegetation, management parameters.

2. Both EASW experiences have recorded a vivid participation of the local inhabitants and decision makers. Viable solutions and proposals tailored for the local situations have been identified in a democratic discussion among the different stakeholders. Local authorities endorsed the results achieved as a basis for the successful implementation of future initiatives to combat drought and desertification at local level.
Relevance to the Plan of Implementation of WSSD: According to the plan of implementation, the project aims to strengthen the implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification to address causes of desertification and land degradation in order to maintain and restore land, and to address poverty resulting from land degradation (§ 41). In particular providing affordable local access to information to improve monitoring and early warning related to desertification and drought ( § 41, e).
