Youth Participation in Plantation Establishment for Combating Desertification in Maputo Province
||Establish a forest plantation in degraded areas with a view to enhance carbon sequestration and rehabilitating degraded lands in the process;
Enhance youth awareness on the need for environmental conservation;
Build local capacities in forestry resources management. In particular, involve the youth in the reforestation pilot project in Maputo province

||Enhancing awareness on forestry management concerns, mobilizing the youth service to undertake reforestation as well as providing experience and employment opportunities to the young people, through appropriate practical and sustainable means of forestry management.

Italian Ministry for the Environment and Territory’s financial contribution: 500.000 USD
To form groups of young people, which will establish 3,000 ha of new plantation aimed at restoring degraded land, reducing the presence of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
||Starting 2004, duration 36 months
||Establishment of forest plantations;
1. Enhance carbon sequestration. Project eligible as “carbon sequestration” initiative under the CDM of the Kyoto Protocol.
2. Build awareness among the youth on environment conservation, rehabilitation and protection.
3. Capacity building in forestry resources management.

||This project addresses several priority actions identified in the plan of implementation which are related to the managing of natural resources as a base for sustainable development in particular:
- Poverty eradication
- Awareness raising and community involvement
- Job creation and increasing of local market
