Innovative means of increasing water resources

Objectives: 1. The project aims at serving all the needy areas with the sufficient amount of drinking water and the water needed for agriculture use through the desalination of seawater and the underground water and the reuse of treated waste water on the agricultural land and the associated technical, economical and institutional and legal aspects. These plants will use renewable energy to operate;
2. The project will be done through carrying out pilot projects to desalinate both the seawater and the underground water, and to reuse the treated wastewater in agriculture.

Contents: Bilateral agreement on environmental protection
Means of Implementation: Project activities will be jointly carried out by Italian and Egyptian Staff. The Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency will contribute to the project by making available work force and needed equipment and will provide the local partners with technical and management Know-how. The Italian experts will ensure Know-how transfer to the Egyptian technicians trough targeted training.
The programme will be carried out by means of courses held in class and “on the job” training (funding provided by Italy).
Target year: 24 months
Target Area/Place: Nile Valley and the Delta
Expected Outcome(S): 1. Demonstrate the feasibility of the project aimed at satisfying the water demand, provide the project area with water desalination and wastewater treatment works and generate an experience and knowledge sharing for the empowerment of the capacity building.
2. Secure the financial resources required for the construction of desalination and wastewater treatment works in order to safeguard the environment from the pollution threat.
3. Prepare the financial assessment report and the economic. Financial model to set the procedures for access to the international funding required for the project implementation.
Relevance to the Plan of Implementation of WSSD: The Development Goal, endorsed by the World Summit on Sustainable Development held in Johannesburg set a new target of halving the proportion of people who do not have access to basic sanitation by 2015. It also recognized the key role of water in agriculture, energy, health, biodiversity and ecosystems as well as in combating poverty.
