Integrated Intervention Aimed at Environmental Improvement Throughout Renewable Energy Promotion, Water Supply and Waste Management in the Dalmatian Island of Mljet and Dalmatian County

Objectives: The principal objectives of the project are:
1 Identification of an integrated harmonic cycle able to minimise the environmental impact of the waste; 2 GHG (Greenhouses Gases) minimisation, reducing both CH4 & CO2 emissions; 3 Energy recovery.

Contents: The identified project is an integrated intervention for producing renewable power supply finalised to water desalination activity, together with a waste management project aimed at the identification of an integrated harmonic cycle able to minimise the environmental impact of the waste, specifically focused on GHG (Greenhouses Gases) minimisation, reducing both CH4 & CO2 emissions, and with energy recovery.
Means of Implementation: Projects total costs: 2.270.000,00 euros
Italian Ministry for the Environment and Territory’s financial contribution: 1.135.000,00 euros
- Waste management improvement in Mljet island, supplying special equipment to facilitate the collection, transportation, and bailing
- Waste management project improvement through the analysis of a possible integrated harmonic cycle, aimed at GHG minimisation and renewable energy promotion
- Renewable energy desalination project identification, with detailed design on site, economic plan of building and management, identification of the related financial scheme, also innovative as international project finance or third party financing or similar, and identification of implementation modalities
- Renewable energy desalination plant implementation and activation
- GHG overall reduction final evaluation, and cost/benefit analysis
- Dissemination of the obtained results and identification of possible replications

Expected Outcome(S): - The promotion of renewable can contribute to reduce CO2 production and global heating that affect desertification.
- The desalinated water produces a parallel benefit to reduction of the groundwater exploitation, extending the reserves availability reducing desert perspective.
- The forecasted energy use from organic waste is an excellent fertilizer as by product than can be used for reforestation purposes and stabilizes water cycle in the first ground level.
Relevance to the Plan of Implementation of WSSD: This project addresses several priority actions identified in the Plan of Implementation which are related to the managing of natural resources as a base for sustainable development in particular:
- Strengthen the implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification;
- Development of the usage of alternative energy sources
- Transfer technologies and capacity building at all levels;
- Recognize the key role of water in agriculture, energy, health, biodiversity and ecosystems as well as in combating poverty.
