Title:

Feasibility study for waste water treatment

Objectives: 1. Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) pilot application to a Bulgarian important river basin, in order to prepare a valid model for its further full implementation and to test a possible integrated approach for environment and health impact assessment; the objective of this part is to produce a preliminary Management Plan for the Iskar Basin;
2. Prefeasibility study for wastewater treatment plants.

Expected Outcome(S): Capacity building: Implementation and testing of recent European Directive concerning river basins management plans for its extended application in the Country. Environment and Health integrated management: To complete the environmental assessment with a health assessment in order to provide the Basin Management Plan with specific relevant issues. Provide necessary tools for funding in order to improve the environmental protection against the river pollution by the construction of waste water treatment works.
Relevance to the Plan of Implementation of WSSD: This project addresses several priority actions identified in the plan of implementation which are related to the managing of natural resources as a base for sustainable development in particular:
- introducing measures to improve the efficiency of water infrastructure to reduce losses;
- develop integrated water resources management and water efficiency plans by 2005;
- adopting prevention and protection measures to promote sustainable water use and to address water shortages;
